Our first step was to procure first-aid equipment and other necessary items for our health centre. Dr Friedrich Doerr’s campaign to raise funds for this purpose in September 2014 was a tremendous success. An incredible 2,750 euros was collected, and so we went shopping! Among other things, we purchased a ventilator, oxygen masks for children and adults, two stretchers, a range of diagnostic equipment, lamps, an intravenous drip stand, forceps and various other small items. So, for the first time, Tarrafal is at last well equipped for first-aid situations! The photo shows the first ‘instalment’ of these new materials.
A donation in kind from Dr Anke Möller provided us with two resuscitation bags, arm and leg splints, and a number of other accessories.
The third instalment of medical equipment was supplied by Dr Martin Peter. On his working holiday in March/April 2015, he brought a suitcase weighing 23 kg that contained a wide variety of medical equipment and supplies, as well as medicines worth around 450 euros. So, overall, our health centre is now the best equipped on the entire island!
